I think President Obama may be in trouble. It has been instructive to watch the tone of the letters to the editor of The Bee over the past year.

During the campaign and the inauguration season, the letters were nearly uniformly supportive, almost worshipfully so. Many readers hailed him as the coming savior of our civilization.

Within only a few months, the tenor of the letters had begun to change. They became more questioning, irritated and critical. Now even the liberals are showing signs of frustration.

Ruben Navarrette Jr. [column Oct. 1], points out that in foreign affairs, the French president is sounding more hawkish than the American one, and President Obama seems unwilling or unable to provide leadership. Indeed, something is amiss. This American president seems to have ended his honeymoon with the voters sooner than any in history.

It is, of course, still early in the game. Bill Clinton appeared washed up in 1994, but the Comeback Kid pulled out an easy re-election two years later. But President Obama needs to work on his game.
