Serving in a small field hospital during the Battle for Cassino in Italy in 1943, I experienced an unforgettable Thanksgiving. There were three men in my station: one American soldier who had a gangrenous leg, another G.I. with small shrapnel wounds on his back and a terrified German teenage soldier, who thought we were going to kill him.

On Thanksgiving Day, the Army made great efforts to provide every soldier with a traditional turkey dinner. On that day, a truck made a hazardous trip to our isolated station with our grand dinner. The German prisoner of war could not believe it when I offered to share our feast with him. He cried.

The truck took the American and the POW to Naples. The other American was treated and sent back to the war on the other side of the mountain.
