Guard dogs must be trained, disciplined

A June 15 letter writer suggested that adopting an aggressive dog would deter property crime. It seems like an efficient way to discourage potential criminals, but it may have dangerous results. First of all, a dog has no way to distinguish from a harmless visitor and a malicious intruder. A dog cannot tell if a person is your friend or your foe. It will make its own judgment and you may not like the result. Read comments

Downtown needs outlets, free parking

Regarding Frank Hoffinger's suggestion on bringing outlets to the Fulton Mall (letter June 15): I think it's a good idea, but the downtown area also needs to quit charging for parking. All of the malls in Fresno and Clovis, along with the outlets in other towns, have free parking. Why would anyone want to pay for parking, when they can park for free in these other areas? I am outraged that our leaders in Washington, D.C., have decided to support, arm and aid Syrian rebels, also known as al-Nusra. These fighters are nothing other than al-Qaida organized in Syria seeking to overthrow the government of President Bashar Assad. They are killers of freedom, Christians, Jews and any Muslims who don't agree with them. They are of the same ilk as those responsible for 9/11. Read comments

Why is the library holding its Summer Reading Program kickoff at the San Joaquin River Parkway ranch house out on Friant Road? How does this serve the greater number? I'm not aware of the bus line that serves that "neighborhood," but then if the children can't drive, let them walk. This program needs to be staged at the Central library, not out near the bluffs.
