A 33-year-old Fresno man was arrested Wednesday after he tried to run over an officer and injured a police dog, authorities said.

The man was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and injuring a police dog, Sgt. Rich Escalante said. The dog, a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois named Turbo, was cut on the neck while fighting with the man, Escalante said. Turbo was reported in good condition.

The incident began about 9:40 p.m. as officers investigated alleged drug activity at a hotel on the 2600 block of East Shaw Avenue. When an officer tried to wave down the suspect's car, he swerved, forcing the officer to dive out of the way, Escalante said. A sheriff's helicopter later found the man's car on the 5800 block of Rancho Drive. The suspect was arrested after he fought with Turbo.
