A 64-year-old Clovis man is in critical condition after his son tried to kill him with a statue and a wood plank, Clovis police say.

The man was at his home Monday night on the 2500 block of Coventry Avenue when his 44-year-old son attacked him, police said. Officers said the suspect beat his father's face with a wood plank before grabbing a large statue and throwing it at his father's head.

The man suffered severe facial injuries and is being treated at Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno.

The suspect, who was temporarily living with his father, ran away before officers arrived. Clovis police dogs and the Fresno police helicopter helped track him down two hours later near the house. He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, and authorities believe that alcohol may have been a factor.
