Police arrested three gang members early Friday and seized an illegal assault weapon in southwest Fresno.

Sgt. Glen Schaefer said the arrest happened after officers heard several gunshots near Fresno and C streets just before 2 a.m. They saw a car speeding away and stopped it near Florence Avenue and Martin Luther King Boulevard.

Three men -- ages 29, 31 and 32 and all members of the Muhammad street gang -- ran from the car and one of them dropped a weapon, Schaefer said. Officers caught up with the three and also recovered a TEC-9 assault weapon, he said.

The men were booked into Fresno County Jail on charges of possession of an illegal weapon and narcotics.
