Tulare County sheriff's deputies are investigating the theft of $4,500 in grapes from a vineyard in Earlimart.

The victim reported the loss Monday from an area near Road 160 and Avenue 40.

Hearing planned on 'Smart Meter' issues

State Senate Majority Leader Dean Florez, D-Shafter, has scheduled a Fresno hearing next week into allegations of inaccurate readings from new "Smart Meters" that Pacific Gas & Electric Co. installed to measure electrical usage.

The hearing will be Oct. 21 at 6:30 p.m. in Assembly Room 1036 of the Hugh Burns State Building, 2550 Mariposa Mall in downtown Fresno.

It will include representatives of PG&E and the state Public Utilities Commission, as well as consumers and advocates.

Public comment will also be accepted.
