Furlough shuts most state offices today

Most state offices, including the Department of Motor Vehicles, will be closed today as part of the state's employee furlough program.

Some state offices will remain open:

-- Parole offices

-- State Department of Education diagnostic center in Fresno

-- Unemployment insurance offices (by phone, only)

-- One-stop career centers

-- California Unemployment Appeals Board

-- Genetic Disease Screening Program (by phone, only)

-- WIC Vendor Hotline (by phone, only)

-- State parks

-- Fish and Game hatcheries and wildlife areas

-- Romero Visitor's Center at San Luis Reservoir

-- Franchise Tax Board

-- State Compensation Insurance Fund

-- Some constitutional offices (including the state Attorney General's office, Controller, Treasurer and Secretary of State).
