ACORN, or the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, has been helping low-income families in Fresno since 2003, said Ricky Nelson, an ACORN community organizer.

The local chapter has about 270 members who advocate for better health care, education, and public safety, and for stopping foreclosures, Nelson said.

With the group under scrutiny, Nelson said, ACORN members don't condone the actions of employees who appear to have broken the law. "What they did was wrong," he said.

But Nelson also said it's wrong for certain "right-wing" groups to target ACORN. "It's obvious the right wing is spearheading the effort to discredit ACORN," he said.
