Firebrand group offers political alternative
Even though the Central Valley Tea Party Web site says "the so-called media" have shirked their watchdog responsibility and become "lapdogs of the left," I like the group's firebrand activism.
I also agree with one of its principal tenets: our exploding national debt -- $11.921 trillion when I wrote this sentence -- strangles economic productivity and threatens America's future.
But to influence policy on taxes, corporate bailouts and runaway deficit spending, the organization -- and other Tea Party Patriot affiliates throughout the country -- must do more than throw spleen-venting parties on April 15 and the Fourth of July.

'Tea Party Patriots' stage rally
SACRAMENTO -- There was no doubting who the enemy was at Friday's "Tea Party Patriots" rally at the Capitol.
"Government is the problem!" the crowd chanted. "No more government!"
The event, the second "tea party" held at the Capitol this year, was billed as a "first-time coalition of thousands to protest government over-regulation."

Missed point of tea party
I have to respond to Gordon Fake's letter April 20. I think he missed the whole point of the tea party protesters.
I attended the event at Save Mart Center on April 15. Most of the people there were just your everyday, tax-paying citizens. Our complaint is not with the taxes we are paying now, it is what our children and grandchildren will be paying for generations to come.
We can't keep printing money and spending trillions of dollars we don't have. Somebody has to pay some day.

* A brief on Page A2 on Saturday incorrectly reported that signs at Fresno's Tea Party made a Huffington Post list of the 10 Most Offensive Tea Party Signs. Fresno did not make the Top 10 but was featured in the blog post.
* A story on the front page of Monday's sports section incorrectly reported the New Mexico State baseball team was in first place in the Western Athletic Conference. Nevada and Hawaii are tied for first place.
The Freedom Rally Tea Party is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the International Agri-Center, just off Highway 99 in Tulare.
The Tulare event is one of about 1,300 nationwide planned for the Fourth of July. It's the second in the central San Joaquin Valley following a Tax Day Tea Party at Fresno State. Organizers of that nearly daylong, weekday event said it drew about 7,500 people, although independent confirmation was not available. Tulare organizers said they're hoping to attract 10,000.
Groups including the Central Valley Tea Party, Bakersfield Tea Party and Tulare Tea Party are sponsoring the event in conjunction with Water For All.
Tea Party organizers say the events focus on the principles of limited government, fiscal responsibility and the free market. The Tulare event will include speakers, music and other entertainment indoors and children's play areas, information booths and food and drink vendors outside.
The event is free. Details are available at www.centralvalleyteaparty.com.
