Clovis' Bryson DeChambeau reached the round of 32 at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championships with a 5-and- 4 victory over Chase Johnson on Wednesday at the Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, Kan.

DeChambeau, a former Clovis East High standout now at SMU, won three of the first nine holes, then essentially put the match away against his opponent from Barberton, Ohio, by winning Nos. 10 and 12. DeChambeau was at 5 under for the round when the matched ended after each made par to tie on No. 14.

DeChambeau advances to face England's Sam Horsfield in a match scheduled to tee off at 7:20 a.m. PDT Thursday. Horsfield beat Elk Grove's Andrej Bevins 2 and 1.

If DeChambeau wins, he'll move on to the round of 16 later Thursday. The quarterfinals and semis are set for Friday with the tournament final Saturday.
