Fire investigators are looking into a blaze that destroyed a playground set Tuesday night in east-central Fresno.

The blaze broke out at a jungle gym, melting plastic tubing and a slide at a park located at Saddleback and East Dayton avenues, near the major intersections of Shields and Temperance avenues.

Officials said it wasn't clear whether the fire was arson or an accident. Fire Department spokesman Koby Johns said damage is estimated at $50,000

In 2005, there was a rash of similar fires at Fresno Unified playgrounds. Officials at the time estimated the cost to replace a jungle gym at Dailey Elementary, near Palm and Shields avenues, at $30,000. In that blaze, someone used a liquid fuel to start the fire.

There also were fires at Turner Elementary, near Peach and Olive avenues, and at Winchell Elementary, near Lowe and South Orange avenues.

Anyone with information about Tuesday's playground fire is asked to call (559) 621-4000.
