Ex-Clovis West star Nikki Okwelogu off to junior worlds

Former Clovis West High state discus champion Nikki Okwelogu will compete in the IAAF World Junior Championships July 22-27 in Eugene, Ore.

Okwelogu, who holds dual citizenship, was selected by the Nigerian national team to compete in the discus and shot put.

The 19-year-old Harvard star won her first Nigerian national shot put title in June and set an Ivy League record during the same national meet in Calabar with a personal-best throw of 171 feet, 11 inches in the discus to finish second.

"It's just a huge scale of a meet, probably, if not the biggest one I've ever been to. It's definitely one of them," Okwelogu told the Boston Herald. "It's going to be so much more competitive, so much more adrenalin flowing and I think it's going be a good meet for me, helping me to just be a competitor through any situation, any competition."

Okwelogu also qualified for (but won't attend) the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, and the African senior championships in Morocco in August.
