NEW ORLEANS — This year's New Orleans Bowl will include a Mountain West Conference tie-in, bowl officials and the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation announced Monday.
The game will be played in the Superdome on Saturday, Dec. 20. Kickoff is at 10 a.m.
The bowl, sponsored by R+L Carriers, usually pits teams from the Sun Belt Conference and Conference USA, which have signed deals that extend their contracts with the bowl for the next six years, through the 2019 game. Foundation spokesman Billy Ferrante says the Mountain West in 2014 is assuming Conference USA's contract for a year.
Mountain West teams have played in the bowl two times: Colorado State in the inaugural 2001 game and San Diego State in 2011.
The Mountain West has seven 2014 bowl deals. The Las Vegas Bowl, which took conference champion Fresno State in 2013, has the first pick. Other tie-ins are with the Poinsettia (San Diego), Hawaii (Honolulu), Armed Forces (Fort Worth, Texas), New Mexico (Albuquerque) and Famous Idaho Potato (Boise).
