A 71-year-old Porterville man is dead after being shot by a stranger, Porterville police said Monday.

About midnight Saturday, gunfire erupted in the 100 block of North Fourth Street east of downtown, police said.

Police found the victim on the ground in front of a home suffering from a single gunshot wound, and people fighting in the street. The victim's family had the alleged shooter pinned down, and police took Steve Junior Gutierrez, 29, of Porterville, into custody.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was taken to a local hospital where he died.

Gutierrez is a convicted felon who was in possession of a stolen and loaded firearm, police said. He was loitering in the area but did not know the victim, police said.

He was booked into the Tulare County Jail on suspicion of homicide, shooting into an inhabited dwelling, being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of stolen property. He is being held without bail.
