Porterville man mishandles gun, shoots himself in head

A 32-year-old Porterville man shot himself in the head just after midnight Sunday when the gun he was handling discharged, the Tulare County Sheriff's Department said.

Sheriff's deputies were called to Sierra View District Hospital around 12:40 a.m. for a victim with a gunshot wound to the head.

An investigation revealed that the victim was traveling in a vehicle with friends and playing with or mishandling a handgun, the sheriff's department said. The gun went off, striking the man in the head. The driver of the vehicle drove the victim to the hospital.

The man was transported to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment. The case is under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call detective Gary Marks or Sgt. Rodney Parker at (559) 735-1898 or (800) 808-0488.
