Trail Mix for 7/10: Sequoia/Kings Canyon add water refill station

The Fresno BeeJuly 9, 2014

The first “designated” water bottle refilling station at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks is now available at Giant Forest Museum in Sequoia National Park. While the parks have long offered places where water bottles could be refilled, new eco-friendly faucets will be installed in areas at both parks this summer.

The first of what will be "designated" water bottle refilling stations throughout Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks is available at Sequoia's Giant Forest Museum, spokeswoman Dana Dierkes said.

Park maintenance and the parks' Green Team are in the process of identifying additional locations, according to Dierkes.

While the parks have long offered places where water containers could be refilled, the new faucets will minimize dripping and encourage people to use fewer disposable plastic bottles — potentially cutting down on litter and waste.

Large bright, blue signs will designate the refilling stations in the parks, with reusable bottles sold at visitors centers and stores.
