Gregory Hein, who was reported missing Wednesday after he did not return from a high Sierra hike, was found Thursday evening near a high Sierra lake with a broken leg, the Fresno County Sheriff's Office said.

The 33-year-old Clovis man was found by ground searchers shortly after 7 p.m. near Davis Lake, at an elevation of more than 10,000 feet.

He was flown to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment. Hospital spokeswoman Mary Lisa Russell said Hein was in serious condition.

Officials believe Hein hiked to Mount Goddard and injured himself on the way back down. He may have been injured for several days.

Several search and rescue team members were still in the search area Thursday and were remaining there overnight until they can be brought out Friday.

Hein drove to Florence Lake on July 3 to hike Mount Goddard in Kings Canyon National Park and was scheduled to return Monday. His family reported him missing Wednesday afternoon after he did not return.

Deputy Chris Curtice said Hein's vehicle was found at the Florence Lake store, but there was no record of him taking the ferry to the Mount Goddard trailhead or staying at any nearby campgrounds.

Deputies used Jeeps, horses and aircraft to search for Hein, the son of Temperance-Kutner Elementary School principal Randy Hein and the grandson of Floyd "Doc" Buchanan, former longtime superintendent for Clovis schools. Gregory Hein attended Buchanan High School.
