The Fresno BeeJuly 9, 2014

A former IRS employee was sentenced Wednesday to four years and five months in prison for claiming more than $1,745,000 in false tax returns, the Department of Justice said.

Justice Department spokeswoman Lauren Horwood said Monica Hernandez, 41, of Fresno, was a part-time data entry clerk in 2010 when she filed three tax returns for herself, each with false claims. In April 2010, Hernandez also stole 68 tax returns and used their information to file false tax returns benefiting herself, Horwood said.

In addition to the prison sentence, Hernandez will have to pay $175,144 in restitution.
