Opening on stage this weekend: 'Hairspray,' 'The Underpants'

Two theater openings this weekend to consider:

-- Reedley's River City Theatre Company, which calls the historic Reedley Opera House its home, is opening the popular musical "Hairspray." Chelsea Harper portrays Tracy Turnblad, the full-figured teen living in 1960s Baltimore whose dream is to dance on "The Corny Collins Show."

Her mother, Edna, traditionally played by a man in drag, is portrayed by Jeff Lusk. The cast includes Niko Kazanjian as Link, Anna Martinez as Velma, Bernadette Tasy as Penny and Dominic Grijalva as Seaweed.

The show opens 8 p.m. Friday and continues through Aug. 3 at the opera house, 1720 10th St., Reedley. Tickets are $15-$36. Details: reedleyrivercitytheatre.org, (559) 638-6500.

-- The Curtain 5 Theatre Group and Jump Right in Productions opens Steve Martin's "The Underpants" at Fresno Soap Co. (formerly known as the Broken Leg Stage), 1470 N. Van Ness Ave.

Martin adapted the play from a 1910 German farce about a bureacrat's wife who allows her underpants to fall at a parade for the king. The cast includes Reshma Meister, Christopher Cook, Cindy Layne, Jason Andrew, Clint Couron and Jerry Palladiono.

The show opens 8 p.m. Friday and continues through July 19. Tickets are $15 advance, $20 at door. Details: jumprightin.com
