Prep volleyball: Buchanan standouts help club team win at Junior National

Buchanan High's Ryan Smith, Donovan Mitchell and Patrick Gasman helped Pleasant Hill-based Pacific Rim Volleyball Academy capture the 17 Open division of the Boys Junior National Championship on Saturday in Houston.

Pacific Rim dropped one set while going 11-0, capping its run through the 36-team division with a 25-20, 25-20 victory over Balboa Bay Asics for the title behind all-tournament selections Smith and Mitchell. Gasman is now with the USA Youth National Training Team in Tulsa, Okla., to prepare for the NORCECA Under 19 Continental Championships.

Other local teams to place included Clovis Volleyball Club (11 in the 14 Open division with a 4-5 record, and 17th in the 18 Open with a 5-6 mark) and Central Cal volleyball Club (17th in 14 Open after going 4-5).
