Scammers posing as Fresno County sheriff's office employees

The Fresno BeeJuly 8, 2014

The Fresno County Sheriff's Office received three reports over the weekend that scammers were posing as employees from its own office.

The suspects make phone calls and advise potential victims of their failure to show up for jury duty. The suspects say the person needs to pay a $200 fine before an arrest warrant is issued, the sheriff's office said.

The victims are asked to put money in a "Green Dot" bank account. Green Dot issues prepaid MasterCard and Visa cards.

The sheriff's office is investigating the case and asks anyone who has been a potential victim or has information regarding the scam to call (559) 600-3111.

The reporter can be reached at (559) 441-6679 or bvaccari@fresnobee.com.
