Fresno State senior free safety Derron Smith was named to the Maxwell Football Club's defensive player of the year watch list.

The 76-player list announced Monday is for the 20th annual Chuck Bednarik Award, named in honor of the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame player.

Smith, the nation's active leader in career interceptions with 14, is already on the College Football Performance Awards Defensive Back of the Year Trophy watch list in addition to being named to three preseason All-America teams.
