An Orange Cove man was killed in a single-car crash early Friday west of Orange Cove, the California Highway Patrol said.

The Fresno County Coroner's Office identified the dead man as Edgar Chavez, 21.

The CHP said Chavez was driving with two passengers when the crash happened just after 1 a.m. They were speeding west on South Avenue just east of Alta Avenue when Chavez lost control of the 2001 Honda and spun out, hitting several orange trees and a wooden power pole before landing on the roof.

Both passengers survived the accident. One of them was identified as 18-year-old David Vargas Farias of Orange Cove, who suffered moderate injuries. The other passenger left the scene before emergency personnel arrived.

The CHP said it is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
