Overheated AC may be to blame in southeast Fresno house fire

The Fresno BeeJune 30, 2014

An attic was damaged by fire in a southeast Fresno home Monday evening, and an overheated air conditioner may be to blame, fire officials said.

Residents alerted fire officials just after 7 p.m. after smelling smoke inside the home in the 4600 block of East Byrd Avenue, Battalion Chief Ron Stogdell said.

"There is extensive damage to the attic in the back of the house," Stogdell said.

Fire crews arrived within four minutes and saw smoke and flames coming from the attic.

No injuries were reported, but the residents will not be able to stay in the home overnight. Damage is estimated at $30,000 to $50,000.

Confirmation of the air conditioner as the cause of the fire is yet to be determined, Stogdell said. "Given the heat, these units are working really hard and who knows what may have malfunctioned."
