Identifying the genuine heroes

The Fresno BeeJune 27, 2014

Anne Biggs' recount of her and her mother's draconian treatment by Irish nuns in The Bee on June 21 serves to remind us that no profession or vocation is immune from miscreants and none should receive unqualified "luminary" status; only those members within who have demonstrated their personal merit, ethical standards and contributions truly deserve such laurels and distinction.

The all-inclusive designation of "hero," frequently applied to all members of law enforcement, the military, firefighters and medical personnel, has marginalized the integrity and accomplishments of those outstanding individuals who possess exemplary qualities of character, courage, compassion and sacrifice.

These are bona fide "heroes" who deserve their singular "place in the sun."
