Still the world's beacon of hope

The Fresno BeeJune 27, 2014

The Chicken Littles are out in full force again as V.J. Christianson (June 24 letter) and others repeat the refrain, "Our country is being destroyed right before our eyes." This time it's this ragtag bunch of children appearing on our southern borders expecting to be met with open arms.

Now mind you, I think they should be turned around and sent right back to their home countries — don't pass go, don't collect $200 — but what sticks in my craw are the doomsayers. I heard the same rants in April of 1980 during the Mariel Boatlift. We were inundated with criminals, the mentally ill and political prisoners from Castro's Cuba.

These people were allowed to stay and 34 years later here we stand, still a beacon of hope and freedom to the world. So enough with all the doom and gloom. Even with all of our problems, we are still the greatest country in the history of man. God Bless the U.S.A.
