Clovis school fire causes $300k in damages, origin still unknown

The three-alarm fire in the multipurpose room at Sierra Vista Elementary Wednesday night caused about $300,000 in damage, according to Clovis fire spokesman Chad Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald said the cause is still under investigation. A fire report is expected next week.

The school is undergoing a $5 million renovation to classrooms and the kitchen by the multipurpose room.

Clovis Unified School District spokeswoman Kelly Avants said it's unclear whether the renovation sparked the fire, but she believes it's unlikely.

"The renovation was actually taking place around the multipurpose room," Avants said. The fire is not expected to slow the renovation work, she said. "We don't anticipate any setbacks."

A restoration company was at the school Thursday to assess damages, she said.

Avants said she doesn't believe fire repairs will affect the start of school in August, but more will be known once the fire report has been completed.
