Yokomi Elementary to get big financial gift

The Fresno BeeJune 24, 2014

A downtown Fresno elementary school is getting a big check from its namesake's family.

The estate of Akira and Nofuko Yokomi will present a $409,776 gift to the Yokomi Elementary community on Wednesday to support the magnet school's science and technology programs.

The school, which opened in 2005, is named after the late Akira Yokomi, longtime owner of Central Fish Co. in Chinatown, who was slain in 1996. His wife Nofuko died in 2013.

"This generous and thoughtful gift to our school certainly reflects the appreciation the Yokomi family has for naming a school in honor of a beloved family member and respected member of the downtown community," Principal Bruce Thele said in a statement. "This will have a positive impact on the educational opportunities for our students for years to come."

Fresno Unified officials say family members will help present the gift during a ceremony at the school at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
