Fresno State's Derron Smith was selected to a third preseason All-America team on Monday, with Athlon Sports naming the free safety to its third team.

Smith was previously named a third-team preseason All-America pick by Phil Steele and a second-team pick by Lindy's Sports. He is the only defensive player not from one of the Power 5 conferences (ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC) or Notre Dame to make Athlon's preseason All-America teams.

Smith enters his senior season as the nation's active leader in career interceptions with 14. The two-time first-team All-Mountain West selection has 211 career tackles, 11.0 tackles for a loss, four sacks and two forced fumbles while playing in 42 career games and making 30 starts.

He is coming off the 2013 season in which he tied for second nationally with seven interceptions and tied for second on the team with 87 tackles. Smith also was named the defensive MVP of the 2013 Mountain West championship game.
