The Fresno BeeJune 20, 2014

The state controller's race for second place continued Friday to be led by Betty Yee.

Going into the weekend, Bay Area Democrat Yee has a 659-vote lead over fellow Democrat and former Assembly Speaker John Perez. The winner will face Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin, a Republican, in the November runoff.

Swearengin eclipsed 1 million votes Friday, with 1,000,285. Yee has 876,670 votes and Perez, 876,011.

The California Secretary of State's office reports that 8,878 votes remain to be counted. More than 6,000 of those votes are from Lake County, where Perez holds a narrow lead. About 1,600 remain to be counted in Santa Cruz County, where Yee has a large lead.

Trinity and Sutter counties each have about 500 votes left to count while Los Angeles and Amador counties have just over 100 votes each remaining. San Mateo has just four votes left to tally.
