Daniel P. Bartell

As dean of Fresno State's then-School of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Daniel P. Bartell led the university's agricultural education program through a time of dynamic change.

Mr. Bartell, who died June 13 at the age of 70, was a leader in the formation of the Department of Viticulture and Enology in 2000 and in developing new programs that enhanced faculty research opportunities. He also contributed to the establishment of the Fresno State Winery, which in 1997 was bonded to bottle and sell its student-produced wines commercially, a first for any university campus in the nation.

"Dean Bartell provided solid leadership for the school and significantly improved the amount of scholarly activity during his tenure," said John D. Welty, president emeritus of Fresno State.

Mr. Bartell received his bachelor's degree in education at Eastern Illinois University in 1966, his master's degree in entomology from Purdue University in 1968 and his doctorate in entomology from the University of Kentucky in 1973. He began his education career in 1968 as a biology instructor at Davis and Elkins College in West Virginia.

Mr. Bartell came to Fresno State in 1992 after working as department chair of entomology at Oklahoma State University. He worked for 14 years to develop the agriculture college into a leader in the region and stepped down in 2006 to return to teaching. He was succeeded by Charles Boyer, current dean of the Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, and was named agriculture dean emeritus.

"Dean Bartell's involvement in the region, state and nation raised the stature of the college and university," Boyer said.

Mr. Bartell was also successful in bringing the California Future Farmers of America's annual conference to Fresno State. He was commended for his dedication to FFA in 2006.

After retirement, Mr. Bartell spent time in Washington, D.C., consulting with the U.S. Department of Agriculture on policies regarding agriculture education.

The family requests any memorial donations be made to the Ag One Foundation in support of the Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology or to a university of the donor's choice.
