Grizzlies Report for 6/19: New Orleans 7, Fresno 5

The Fresno BeeJune 19, 2014

Walk on over: One inning after Fresno forged a 5-4 lead with a three-run rally, New Orleans responded with three of its own — fueled by four walks and a hit batter — as the Zephyrs won 7-5 at home Thursday in a Pacific Coast League game.

Bullpen folds: Adam Reifer pitched a perfect seventh with his team in the lead for the first time, striking out two in relief of Grizzlies starter Edwin Escobar. But in the eighth, Reifer issued a leadoff walk to start his team's unraveling. Dan Runzler came on and hit a batter and, after a flyout advanced the runners to second and third, allowed Juan Diaz's tying RBI single. A groundout made it 6-5 and two more walks loaded the bases. Jorge Bucardo replaced Runzler and walked in a run.

Kontos back: Right-hander George Kontos returned to the Fresno roster after his demotion by major league parent-club San Francisco. He is 0-2 with a 3.80 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 232/3 innings with the Grizzlies. He pitched respectably for the Giants, giving up five runs and 12 hits with 16 strikeouts in 142/3 innings, but San Francisco needed to make room for the return of primary setup man Santiago Casilla from a hamstring injury.

Up next: Fresno RH Jason Berken (7-6, 4.80 ERA) will face RH Alex Sanabia (2-2, 5.63) as the series concludes at 5 p.m. Friday. A four-game set follows at Round Rock and after an off-day Wednesday, the Grizzlies return home for four games with Salt Lake.
