City/County softball: Fresno Christian pitcher aids City's comeback win

The Fresno BeeJune 18, 2014

Jenna Weimer had an ERA of 2.65 this season against a slate of primarily Division V and VI opposition.

But she emerged unscathed against a collection of the Fresno area's top high school seniors Wednesday night at Margie Wright Diamond at Fresno State.

Weimer, from 187-student Fresno Christian, pitched three scoreless innings to key City's 6-5 victory in the 33rd City/County All-Star softball game. She was named the City's MVP.

"It was a little intimidating pitching against Division I people," Weimer said. "But my coaches told me I could do it and now I know I can."

Weimer was perfect in her first two innings (the sixth and seventh) before allowing a pair of one-out singles in the top of the eighth. But the right-hander rallied by striking out Kylinn Gunderson (Minarets) and getting Savanna Sieger (Kingsburg) on a grounder to second to escape the jam.

Weimer went to the outfield to warm up before her second and third innings, figuring she was out of the game, only to be summoned back to the circle by City coach Steve Uyeda (Memorial).

"I wasn't expecting to pitch as much as I did," said Weimer, who was hesitant to allow her high school coach, Jeff Ragan, to nominate her for the game. "It means a lot."

City had to rally from an early 4-0 deficit, with Dayna Manser (Memorial) carrying much of the load.

Manser's RBI double to right -- on a play where courtesy runner Miranda Corrales was stealing -- in the bottom of the eighth provided the go-ahead run after Sarah Santana (Clovis West) had tied it with an RBI single.

"I knew my runner was stealing so I had to protect," said Manser, headed to play for Cal Poly next season.

It was also Manser who put City on the board in the sixth with a two-run single that followed consecutive base hits from Aubrie Tone (Clovis North), Toni Cardoza (Memorial) and Ariel Robles (Sanger).

"It was a really exciting and cool game to play in," Manser said. "I wasn't expecting (to contribute heavily at the plate), but it felt good to help my team out."

City had put Manser in a position to win it by cutting its deficit to 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh on a run-scoring double by Paris Batts (Edison) and an RBI single by Macy Denney (Hoover).

County took the lead in the third on run-scoring hits from Kaylynn Burt (Central), Taylor Rowley (Central) and Leslie Garza (Kingsburg), and Burt would later score on a wild pitch.

Burt gave the County a 5-0 lead in the fifth when she scored on a delayed double steal along with Kerman's Giana Olivera.

Sieger was named the County's MVP after pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings and kick-starting the four-run third with a leadoff double. Boise State-bound Rachel Rodriguez (Central) pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings for County.

Samantha Blair (Clovis) worked four scoreless innings over three trips into the game for City.
