Grizzlies Report for 6/18: New Orleans 5, Fresno 1

The Fresno BeeJune 18, 2014

New Orleans blues: Fresno gave up four runs in the fifth inning, didn't have an extra-base hit all game and fell 5-1 at New Orleans in a Pacific Coast League game Wednesday night at Zephyr Field. Grizzlies starter Mitch Lively escaped major trouble through the first four innings, with just one run allowed. He was not as fortunate in the fifth. Jake Dunning, who relieved Lively with one out in the inning, added to Lively's struggles by allowing two inherited runners to score. The Grizzlies (37-37) have dropped five of their past six games.

New wins leader: New Orleans starter Elih Villanueva held the Grizzlies to one run on five hits and struck out five in six innings to get the win. Villanueva (8-3, 2.85 ERA) leads the PCL in victories, a category that the Grizzlies' Jason Berken had occupied for almost a month before he became stuck on seven wins.

No credit: Andrew Susac scored in the seventh on Travis Ishikawa's grounder, but there was no RBI on the play since Ishikawa hit into a double play to bring in the run.

Up next: The series continues at 5 p.m. Thursday with Grizzlies RH Edwin Escobar (3-6, 5.26 ERA) scheduled to face Zephyrs LH Brad Hand (1-0, 1.50). Escobar, who entered the season considered the top prospect on the Grizzlies, has allowed at least four runs in five of his past seven starts. Hand was in the Florida Marlins' starting rotation around the beginning of the season but lost the gig after two starts. He landed on the disabled list in late May and has been rehabbing in the minors since. Today will be Hand's second start in Triple-A.

Baseball camp coming up: The Grizzlies will host their annual Grizzlies Baseball Camp on June 26-27 at Chukchansi Park. Boys and girls ages 5-14 will receive baseball instruction from select Grizzlies players and coaches during the two-day camp, which welcomes youths of all skill levels. Registration fee is $100 per participant, and the deadline is Friday. For more information, visit www.FresnoGrizzlies.com.
