Tulare Western's Joe Herrera glides to a first in his 800-meter heat at the 2014 State Track and Field Championships on June 6, 2014.

Grade: Senior

School: Tulare Western

Marvelous Mustang: He'll leave for UCLA on scholarship as the greatest athlete in the history of Tulare Western track and field. He was a 13-time East Yosemite League gold medalist in six events (100, 200, 400, 800, 400 relay, 1600 relay) in a four-year career. This season, he scored 19¼ points at the Central Section Masters meet, placing first in the 400 (47.48), second in the 200 (21.54), sixth in the 1,600 relay (3:25.56) and seventh in the 400 relay (43.59). Despite an illness that had his day begin with a 103-degree temperature, he finished fourth in the state 400 with a school-record 47.25 -- No. 8 in section history.

He said it: "It's been absolutely fantastic to watch him grow and get better and better, not only athletically but as a young man. He's an excellent student (3.9 GPA) and is very humble. Four a school our size (1,656 students), you don't see a lot of those athletes. He'll have a huge upside at UCLA." -- Mustangs coach Tony Rodriguez.
