Text message challenge leads to Coarsegold stabbing

The Fresno BeeJune 17, 2014

High-tech trash talk between rival suitors ended with one man in the hospital and the other behind bars on attempted murder charges after a Coarsegold stabbing, the Madera County Sheriff's Office reports.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Erica Stuart said Lance Sinklier Jr., 19, of Oxnard is accused of the knife attack on the 23-year-old victim after the rivals challenged one another via text messages to "mano-a-mano" combat for the affections of the same woman.

The two were to meet Saturday at a dueling site on Kennedy Road in Coarsegold. The ground rules were for unarmed combat, but Stuart said one of the combatants showed up with a knife -- although both men deny being the one who brought it. The victim had multiple stab wounds but is expected to recover. Sinklier was arrested Sunday morning during a traffic stop in Oakhurst and is held without bail.
