Two men have been arrested after a police officer memorial in downtown Fresno was vandalized with anti-police messages written in chalk.

Officers responded about 7:25 p.m. Monday to a report of about 20 protesters marking up the memorial on Mariposa Mall, police Lt. Joe Gomez said.

Gomez said five of the protesters were videotaping police while others made anti-police comments. Officers inside police headquarters identified two men as being responsible for writing on the monument.

The men, identified as Brian David Sumner, 25, and Andrew Wayne Whitemore, 18, were cited on the vandalism charges and released.
