A pedestrian is in extremely critical condition Tuesday morning after he was struck by a vehicle in central Fresno.

Lt. Joe Gomez said the collision occurred shortly after midnight near the Belmont Avenue circle under the Union Pacific Railroad bridge. The driver of the vehicle, who was en route to work, told officers he did not see the 25-year-old man walking on Belmont Avenue and drove into him.

The man struck the vehicle's windshield and fell to the pavement, sustaining head trauma and other injuries.

The pedestrian was rushed to Community Regional Medical Center.
