Boy, 12, killed driving a lawn mower in Merced County

A 12-year-old boy who was driving a lawnmower in rural Merced County died Saturday after a collision involving the lawn mower and a car, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The boy was taken eventually to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, where he died. His name has not been released.

The crash was reported around noon near Westside Boulevard, west of Sultana Drive, just southeast of Livingston.

The boy was driving a 2007 Ariens lawn mower east on the south shoulder of Westside Boulevard, according to CHP Officer Moises Onsurez. Meanwhile, 19-year-old Daniel Arroyo of Winton was driving a 1996 Ford Mustang about 75 mph east on Westside Boulevard. As the Mustang approached the lawn mower and moved into the opposite lane of traffic, the boy attempted to turn left on the mower and was struck.
