Buchanan High's John Spurgeon in boys soccer and Clovis' Ben Holscher in boys wrestling were honored Saturday night as state coaches of the year by the California Coaches Association.

The association honored leaders in 27 individual sports as well as Boys and Girls athletic directors of the year, male and female assistants of the year and a Rookie Coach of the Year at its 57th annual Hall of Fame/Coach of the Year Awards ceremony in Sacramento.

Spurgeon is coming off a year in which he led the Bears to their third Central Section Division I title in the past four seasons.

Holscher, in his first season as the co-head coach of one of the nation's preeminent wrestling programs, helped lead the Cougars to a fourth straight state championship.
