Grizzlies Report for 6/13: Omaha 7, Fresno 6

The Fresno BeeJune 13, 2014

Slipping away: Fresno closer Heath Hembree allowed a run in the ninth on Justin Maxwell's sacrifice fly, Christian Colon took lefty Dan Runzler deep for a solo homer in the 11th and the Grizzlies blew a four-run lead in losing 7-6 to Omaha to open a four-game Pacific Coast League series Friday at Chukchansi Park. Maxwell finished 4 for 5 with a homer, triple and three RBIs.

Starting anew: A day after Adam Duvall saw his 19-game hitting streak end, the Grizzlies' first baseman went 2 for 5 while driving in two. He came within a couple feet of a three-run homer in the first. Instead, he had to settle for an RBI double after the ball bounced near the top of the wall in right field.

Close call: Fresno starter Edwin Escobar suffered a scare when he took a grounder off his pitching hand in the fifth. Escobar finished the inning but left before the start of the sixth. The left-hander, considered the No. 2 prospect in the Giants' farm system, allowed five runs on 12 hits, including two home runs. Escobar's ERA is 5.26.

Age difference: While the 22-year-old Escobar started for the Grizzlies, the Storm Chasers got a look at longtime major leaguer Bruce Chen, 36, who is on a rehab assignment for the Kansas City Royals because of a back injury. Escobar was 6 when Chen made his debut in the majors with Atlanta in 1998. Chen has played for 10 big league teams in 16 seasons and had one of his best years in 2013 — posting a 3.27 ERA in 34 games with the Royals. Chen has a career 4.53 ERA. And he looked quite hittable Friday, as the Grizzlies roughed him up for six runs in three innings.

New DA in the house: Newly elected Fresno County District Attorney Lisa Sondergaard Smittcamp threw out a ceremonial first pitch and received a loud round of applause. She defeated incumbent Elizabeth Egan.

Up next: The teams play two Saturday, starting at 6:05 p.m. Both games are scheduled for seven innings. Grizzlies RH Jason Berken (7-5, 4.89 ERA) will face RH Clayton Mortensen (1-0, 0.00) in game 1; LH Mike Kickham (5-5, 3.88) takes on RH Aaron Brooks (5-2, 2.79) in game 2.
