Grizzlies Report for 6/12: Fresno 5, Iowa 2

The Fresno BeeJune 12, 2014

Panik power: Joe Panik belted a tiebreaking grand slam in the fifth and Fresno beat Iowa 5-2 on Thursday in the finale of a four-game Pacific Coast League series at Chukchansi Park.

Pumping up: Panik's one-out blast was a laser down the right-field line that just cleared the wall. The homer was his fifth — one more than his 2013 total at Double-A Richmond — and extended his hitting streak to eight games. Panik has two career slams in four minor league seasons.

Turnaround: Grizzlies starter Mitch Lively found his groove after a bumpy first inning — in which he allowed a leadoff single and steal by Arismendy Alcantara and Rafael Lopez's RBI base hit. Lively followed with four shutout frames, including 1-2-3 innings in the fourth and fifth. He retired two in the sixth before Chris Valaika's homer made it 5-2. Lively went seven, giving up two earned runs on six hits while striking out five.

Tag-teaming: Juan Ciriaco led off the bottom of the third with a liner up the middle for the first hit off Cubs starter Eric Jokisch. Lively bunted Ciriaco to second and Darren Ford followed with a line-drive single to right that tied it 1-1.

Roster moves: Grizzlies C Andrew Susac returned after a stint on the disabled list with a hamstring injury. Sent down to San Jose was C Trevor Brown. Susac was denied a hit on a fourth-inning line drive as center fielder Ryan Kalish made a diving grab.

Breaking up: Kalish broke his bat while fouling a ball off in the second, with one end sailing toward Panik on the back edge of the infield dirt. In the fourth, Grizzlies cleanup hitter Adam Duvall (who saw his 19-game hitting streak end) splintered his bat on a foul ball.

Minicozzi a marvel: Fresno LF Mark Minicozzi impressed fans by sliding on his knees into the visitor's bullpen to snag Brett Jackson's foul ball in the top of the seventh.

Up next: Fresno LH Edwin Escobar (3-6, 4.99 ERA) faces Omaha LH Bruce Chen (0-1, 9.00) in the opener of a four-game series at 7:05 p.m. Friday. Chen, a starter in the Kansas City Royals rotation, is rehabbing from a bulging disc.
