Man standing on road struck, killed in Madera County

A man standing on a rural Madera County died and a second sustained major injuries when they were struck by a car early Wednesday, the California Highway Patrol reported.

About 2 a.m. on Avenue 9 west of Road 23, Leonel Lopez, 24, of Madera was driving a 2003 Honda Accord when he struck three men standing in the westbound lane. The CHP said the Honda was moving about 60 mph.

Adrian Ayon Guzman, 30, died at the scene. Alejandro Carrillo, 23, sustained the major injuries and David Meza, unknown age, sustained minor injuries.

The CHP said alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor in the incident.
