Fresno State junior Derick Velazquez chose pro ball over another year in school, agreeing to terms Tuesday with the Houston Astros.
The right-hander spent much of the year pitching in relief for the Bulldogs. In 56 1-3 innings, Velazquez went 3-5 with a 4.79 ERA, striking out out 28 and walking 23.
"It's just a relief," Velazquez told MLB.com. "It's just a dream come true. I think when I get on the plane, it will really hit me."
Velazquez said he was to report to Kissimmee, Fla., before heading to Tri-City (Troy, N.Y.) of the short season A-level New York-Penn League.
Velazquez prepped at Los Banos and then went 11-0 with a 1.43 ERA in one season at Merced College, earning state junior college All-America and NorCal Player of the Year honors.
