Grizzlies Report for 6/10: Fresno 3, Iowa 2

The Fresno BeeJune 10, 2014

Big bats chip in: Fresno's Mark Minicozzi and Adam Duvall, the team's 3-4 hitters, each drove in a run in the sixth and four relievers combined for three scoreless innings in a 3-2 win over Iowa in a Pacific Coast League game Tuesday. An announced crowd of 3,149 at Chukchansi Park saw the game end with prized Cubs prospect Javier Baez hitting a shot to right, where Chris Dominguez made the final catch as he bumped into the wall. Mike Kickham got the win, striking out eight in six innings.

Going yard: Grizzlies first baseman Travis Ishikawa pulled a solo home run to right in the second to tie it 1-1. Ishikawa's not quite the power threat he was when he belted a combined 24 homers with the Grizzlies and Double-A Connecticut in 2008. But his third this season came in his 100th at bat with Fresno, and he hit nine in 297 at-bats for two Triple-A teams in 2013.

Speed demon: Cubs leadoff hitter Arismendy Alcantara showed off his speed, hitting a a shot to center for a standup triple in the fifth. Alcantara later scored to put Iowa on top 2-1.

Smart running: Grizzlies outfielder Darren Ford helped the rally along in the sixth, sprinting from second to third while three Cubs fielders waited for a Joe Panik dribbler down the third-base line to roll foul. It never did and by the time Iowa picked it up and made a throw, Ford was in. He went on to score, tying it 2-2, on a Minicozzi chopper, misplayed into an error at third.

Prospect watch: A night after going 3 for 5 with a homer, Baez went 0 for 5. Ranked No. 5 overall on Baseball America's prospects list, Baez had a scare in the seventh when he fouled a ball into the ground and it bounced back into his face. The trainer came out but Baez stayed in.

Starting again: Grizzlies CF Gary Brown was back starting after missing Sunday with hamstring tightness. He did enter midway through Monday's game on defense. He was 0 for 3 Tuesday, but had a catch with his back to the wall in the eighth.

Up next: Grizzlies RH Chris Heston (5-3, 4.09 ERA) is to face Cubs LH Chris Rusin (4-7, 3.14) at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday.
