Atwater soldier killed in Afghanistan

Family members confirmed Atwater High School graduate Terry Hurne was one of five soldiers killed in Afghanistan Monday night, just a few weeks before he was scheduled to return home.

Hurne, 34, was serving his second tour in Afghanistan, but was supposed to come home on July 4, according to his father, Norman Hurne. As an Army specialist, Hurne was supposed to be tearing down barracks, Norman Hurne said.

"He couldn't discuss what he was doing over there. He was looking forward to getting out of there," Hurne told the Merced Sun-Star Tuesday. "He was trying to make the best of every day."
