Grizzlies Report 6/8: Las Vegas 5, Fresno 4

The Fresno BeeJune 8, 2014

Las Vegas fires back: Fresno second baseman Joe Panik put the Grizzlies ahead early with a solo home run in the first inning, but the 51s tagged starter Edwin Escobar for four runs in the bottom half of the inning. A fielding error in the sixth scored one more for Las Vegas in a 5-4 home victory in a Pacific Coast League game in front of 2,045 fans at Cashman Field.

Escobar's streak ends: Escobar, the Giants' No. 2 prospect according to Baseball America, was 3-0 with a 3.10 ERA in three previous starts. But a four-run first ended his streak, dealing Escobar his sixth loss of the season. The left-hander then pitched four shutout innings, finishing with six hits allowed and five strikeouts before Brett Bochy came on to start the sixth.

A little late: Fresno scored single runs in the second, sixth and eighth innings, climbing within one run of the lead. But the 51s held on by stranding 11 Grizzlies on base.

Bullpen stingy: The Grizzlies bullpen did not allow an earned run in its three innings of relief. Bochy pitched the sixth but walked three, as one run scored on an error by third baseman Adam Duvall. Jorge Bucardo and Erik Cordier pitched perfect seventh and eighth innings, but the Grizzlies' offense couldn't funnel in the run support.

Dominican dominance: Grizzlies shortstop Juan Ciriaco continued hitting lights-out in Las Vegas, going 3 for 4 with a triple and home run Sunday — his fifth homer of the season. Over the series, Ciriaco hit 11 for 14 (.786) with four doubles, a triple, three home runs and five RBIs.

Up next: Fresno sends RH Jason Berken (7-4, 4.59 ERA) against Iowa LH Tsuyoshi Wada (5-3, 2.60) in the series opener Monday at 7:05 p.m. Wada, who pitched for Japan in the 2004 and 2008 Olympics and also in the 2006 World Baseball Classic when his country won gold, will make his 12th Pacific Coast League start. The game is the first of eight straight at Chukchansi Park for the Grizzlies.
