Grizzlies Report for 6/6: Fresno 10, Las Vegas 1

The Fresno BeeJune 6, 2014

Pitching prowess: Fresno received a gem from its starting pitcher for a second straight night, this time with Chris Heston allowing three hits and a run in seven innings, as the visiting Grizzlies beat Las Vegas 10-1 on Friday in a Pacific Coast League game. In Thursday's series opener, Mike Kickham allowed two hits in seven scoreless innings.

Chopping away: It'll take some work, but the Grizzlies continue to show signs they might whittle a little off a team ERA that was at 4.48 going in — ninth in the 16-team PCL.

Doubles delight: Fresno INF Juan Ciriaco doubled in each of his first three trips to the plate, singled, then doubled again while going 5 for 5. He had three doubles in 121 at-bats until Friday. But his bat is heating up — a pinch-hit homer Thursday had given him seven hits in 16 at-bats over five games. Adam Duvall also had one of the team's eight doubles to go with his PCL-leading 18th home run.

Surprise bolt: Speedy OF Darren Ford made it 1-0 with a line-drive homer to left in the first. He has hit as many as nine in a single season — with Class-A San Jose in 2009 and two A-level teams in 2007 — but has just 45 in 3,344 career minor league at-bats.

Masher: Fresno's Mark Minicozzi went into Friday's game leading all of organized professional baseball in RBIs (22), three more than his closest competition (Frank Schwindel of low-A Lexington) in the minors and five better than the majors leader in that span (Houston's George Springer). He was on a 12-game run in which he was 21 for 48 with five doubles, three homers, 22 RBIs, five walks and 11 runs before going 0 for 4 on Friday.

Up next: RH Mitch Lively (2-3, 6.65 ERA) faces RH Joel Carreno (1-3, 4.67) as the series continues at 7:05 p.m. Lively is 2-2 with a 6.03 ERA in seven starts; he's pitched six times in relief. Carreno also has bounced between the rotation and the bullpen, striking out 16 but allowing 20 hits and eight walks in 16 2/3 innings as a starter. The series will conclude Sunday afternoon, with the Grizzlies returning home to face Iowa for four starting at 7:05 p.m. Monday.
