Grizzlies Report for 6/5: Fresno 9, Las Vegas 4

The Fresno BeeJune 5, 2014

Complete victory: Mike Kickham pitched two-hit, shutout ball across seven innings and Mark Minicozzi drove in five runs as Fresno beat host Las Vegas 9-4 to open a four-game Pacific Coast League series Thursday night.

Kickham when he's up: It marked the third time this year that Kickham — a left-hander who was a sixth-round pick by the San Francisco Giants in 2010 — went at least six shutout innings. His best outing was a eight-inning five-hitter on April 24 at home against Albuquerque.

Good start: The Grizzlies jumped to a 3-0 lead in their first at-bat. Gary Brown led off with a double, moved up on Joe Panik's groundout to second baseman Danny Muno (Fresno State) and scored on Minicozzi's single. Adam Duvall followed with a single and another groundout to Muno, this time by Travis Ishikawa, put both runners in scoring position. 51s RH Noah Syndergaard uncorked a wild pitch to score Minicozzi, then left with an injury; Chris Dominguez greeted RH Giancarlo Alvarado with a triple. Nick Noonan's grounder to Muno ended the inning.

Mets prospect hurt: After tumbling over Minicozzi at the plate, Syndergaard got up gingerly, made two warmup pitches and left the game. The New York Mets, Las Vegas' major league affiliate, later announced that he had "left shoulder discomfort." Whew, since he was making his first start after a short stint on the disabled list with a sore right elbow. Fears last month were that he was headed toward Tommy John surgery, but an MRI at that time showed no damage. At the start of the year, he was projected to be a call-up this season to the Mets.

Muno muscles up: Muno slugged his sixth homer, a two-run shot, in the eighth.

Up next: Fresno sends RH Chris Heston (4-3, 4.42 ERA) against LH Darin Gorski (0-0, 4.26) as the series continues at 7:05 p.m. Friday. Heston, who has 46 strikeouts and 19 walks in 59 innings, is 0-0 with a 3.90 ERA against Las Vegas.
